Coopers at work. There is no production line, the coopers work on the same cask from start to finish. They are paid by the cask and average around three casks per hour.

The casks have to remain watertight for at least three years and often for several decades- with no glues, sealants (other than the reeds they use at the ends) or nails. If the cask fails the pressure test the cooper has to rework it, and he doesn't get paid until it passes.
