The way I usually go to the mountains takes me past a relic of a building on the side of the road, and each time I go past I tell myself that someday I’ll have to stop and look more closely. I finally did. While I was looking around, a young man who lived nearby came to check and make sure I was not vandalizing the building, which seemed like an odd concern given the condition of it, but I assured him I was not, and spoke to him a little while. He wore a 30 caliper bullet on a chain around his neck, close-cropped hair, and a sleeveless tee-shirt. He informed me that this used to be a campground when his now 74 year old grandfather was a boy, and that his grandfather had worked there. The words “Tipton’s Grocery” could still be made out on the side of the building, though from the words spray painted on the inside warning of work left for more than three days, it seems to have functioned as some kind of repair shop at some point as well. It’s easy to imagine that this building had a varied history, and easy to imagine that it will one day be nothing more than an empty lot. Time moves slowly, but inexorably. I find myself more interested in things that have suffered the ravages of time as I experience more of them myself, I suppose.
