I owned a camera from some time in the mid 1980s, though I never really learned to use it very well. The first shot I ever made that I really thought had promise was a shot of moving water. I managed to get it to be a little silky, and I was inspired. That really motivated me to get better at this photography thing. I bought my first good camera, a Nikon N90s, in 1996, and have been taking photography pretty seriously since then.

I still love the look of moving water with a long exposure, so that the water turns silky. I know there are those who think it cliche, and perhaps it is. It is argued that is not really the way water looks, though I'm at a loss to see how the jagged look one gets with a short exposure looks anything like what water looks like, either. In any case, it is a poor cook who cannot suit himself, as the saying goes, so I find myself coming back to the water, with some regularity, to see if I can once more capture the soft, silky look that still captivates me. This shot is one I took last year on the Little River, near Elkmont, in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
