Oosterdam Cruise Vacation 2015

Whakaari/White Island (25) - 25 February 2015

25 Feb 2015 94
On a cruise with many diverse and exciting sights and experiences, perhaps the most memorable was cruising in the vicinity of White Island which is New Zealand's only active marine volcano. Situated in the Bay of Plenty, east of North Island, its 321m are impressive enough but another 1300m lie below the sea as the structure rises from the seabed. I was so impressed that this series contains more than 50 photographs after editing. 200_2_P1030543

Flinders Street Station - 4 March 2015

04 Mar 2015 1 129
Flinders Street Station in Melbourne was completed in 1909 and would certainly feature on any list of the world's most striking railway architecture. It was the first railway station in an Australian city and the world's busiest passenger station in the late 1920s. Today's infrastructure, serving Metro trains, is rather more prosaic below street level than the spectacular building but there are charming features such as the clocks just visible here and featured in the next picture. 200_2_P1040069

"I'll meet you under the clocks" is a Melburnian idiom referring to the charming reminder of a more genteel age above the entrance to Melbourne's Flinders Street Station. These are just four of those lovely clocks, each set to the timetabled time of the next departure on some of the many lines served from the location. 200_2_P1040075

The well equipped Station Pier was the Melbourne destination of Holland America Oosterdam on arrival from Port Chalmers (NZ). On the other side of the pier was 'Spirit of Tasmania I' which is one of two ferries which provides daily (and, seasonally, twice daily) service between Melbourne and Devonport, Tasmania. Pedestrian Bridge (5) - 4 March 2015

04 Mar 2015 82
This short series might seem a bit OTT but I was rather taken with this bridge over the Yarra River in central Melbourne. As far as I can tell, it is called simply the Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge is adorned with so-called love locks although not the extent of the Pont de l'Archevêché in Paris and also provides access to the Ponyfish Island Cafe on the Southbank side. 200_2_P1040090
