Very familiar to me. 50 years later I would see the same expressions on the faces of long-term residents of the South Yorkshire County Asylum, Middlewood, Sheffield , the same closed, shut-in expressions, or the paranoid, hostile staring eyes. Some mentally ill, others put there for being unmarried mothers, for being awkward or unwanted by their families. And yet you can also detect the sense of community, the togetherness of nurse and patient, the benevolence of the asylum. Asylum as shelter of last resort..

Mostly gone now, of course, though you sometimes see these same facial expressions on the faces of the homeless in the streets of the city.
