Lamentations 2020

Lamentations 2020
The inspiration of this photo composition comes from Lamentations 1 since as they were relevant to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC, they are strikingly relevant to New York City of 2020, viewed by many as the “capital of the world.” In the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, NYC has seen eerily empty streets, and scarce few visitors from the outside. Her businesses are shuttered and shut and cultural venues silenced. NYC has also been abandoned by many of her wealthiest who at the start of the pandemic, fled in fear. She has experienced empty shelves and been embraced by a new “Great Depression” and the consequent reality that things of value during the pre-COVID-19 era matter little today with some trading material goods for scarce necessities. Last, in her greatest time of need, NYC has been abandoned by the federal government and denied essential funding for hospitals and overtime costs, and resources such as sufficient quantities of test kits for prompt tests for all.

Lamentations 1:
[1] How deserted lies the city, once so full of people! How like a widow is she, who once was great among the nations!
[2] Bitterly she weeps… tears are on her cheeks… [T]here is no one to comfort her.
[4] All her gateways are desolate… her young women grieve, and she is in bitter anguish.
[6] All the splendor has departed… Her princes… in weakness they have fled…
[7] When her people fell… there was no one to help her.
[11] …her people groan as they search for bread; they barter their treasures for food to keep themselves alive.
[20] I am in torment within… inside, there is only death.
[22] My groans are many and my heart is faint.

Fortunately NYC and the world will not remain mired in this hellish pandemic forever since we are reminded in Lamentations 3:57-58: You came near when I called to You, and You said, “Do not fear!” You… took up my case; you redeemed my life! And yes, so as declared in Psalm 104:30 – “You send forth Your spirit… and renew the face of the Earth” we can be assured – “Mourning will be turned into joy!” [Jeremiah 31:13] as the COVID-19 pandemic is “swept away… like the morning mist” [Isaiah 44:22] such that “Times of refreshing may [yet] come [again].” [Acts 3:19]

Note: Created May 17, 2020 from photographs taken at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY (May 7, 2012) and Rockefeller Center Observation Deck, New York, NY (December 23, 2016).

I agree, and one picked a qualified team that included scientists to create a re-opening plan with safeguards in place to respond immediately if things go wrong. Clearly the right leader at the right time for NY!

A really well thought out work of art. That is a wonderful angel and you've made great use of her.

I can't imagine being in NYC right now. I live in a suburb - it is built for isolation. I'm glad we can all connect on the internet as we all need to feel together in all this.

Thank you for the hopeful spirit as well. Art and hope - two things we can always have.

Hurtful tears in my heart my friend William. This image evokes clearly how I feel. I try so hard to keep so busy not to think: I found a bit of a remedy working in the yard from 7am til 7pm...but my back feels it too. Please stay well my friend. NY is my world, when it hurts, I hurt.

Beautifully portrayed William, and so true.
This is like a nightmare we cannot wake up from. Our town is deserted too. I am just starting week 9 of my 12 week lock-down. I take the dog for a short walk each day in the woods, but that's it.
Virtual hugs, and prayers for you and your wife.

Deeply touching work, William!
To be abandoned by a federal government in such situations is incredibly and unspeakably sad. Comforting is, that there are limits to even such a virus, and that every crisis reveals the true self of a person/government, and thus opens up opportunities.
With all my heart, I wish all affected people worldwide God's blessing and consolation, and continued strength and stamina in the crisis.
Stay strong, and stay well!

Well said! We will overcome and hopefully with God's abundance of blessings, the world will be a better, more compassionate and loving place where joy will supplant all sorrow.

A strikingly beautiful image William, - the wings of despair. Well considered notes that really hit home. I like the message of hope at the end. They are starting to open up business gradually here again, with social distancing measures taken but I very much fear this may bring about a further outbreak. I pray this is not the case
3 years ago.
William Sutherland club has replied to Ecobird club
There must be hope, Ecobird! Actually there always is hope since light always prevails over darkness, good over evil even if it doesn't always seem that way. Let's hope there is no second wave like some fear!

A superb image, William, very appropriate to the situation in NY (and the wider USA). You are at the apex of this dreadful virus while we have largely been spared from it and, although our isolation has helped, it must be said that government decisions (or lack thereof) have played major roles in the outcomes. At least you have a Governor who is taking an intelligent leadership role locally. Stay safe!
3 years ago. Edited 3 years ago.
William Sutherland club has replied to tiabunna club
Yes, government played a significant role and your country, New Zealand, Norway, Iceland, Hong Kong and Taiwan clearly demonstrated the most efficient response! :) If it wasn't for our Governor, I dread what the situation would be like today in NY... it certainly would've been significantly worse!

What a striking, haunting image, William, paired brilliantly with Jeremiah's Lamentations. Re NYC being abandoned, I remember the "Ford to City: Drop Dead" headline in the Daily News in 1975. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose; which provokes us to make sure that we never return to the old "normal" which consigned (and still consigns) so many people to poverty and desperation. La lutte continue.

Thank you Old Owl! Who can forget the way President Ford has treated NYC. In the end, he lost his re-election bid. Trump may follow the same path. Fortunately, as NYC was left for dead and experienced a renaissance 20 years later and rose again after the 9/11 attacks, NYC will persevere yet again! Stay well!

THE oustanding picture for everybody in the world in those pertubating times... But to lament is vain! to learn about this situation and make something for render the future more human....

as long as money will be the one and only aim of people, alas...........
William Sutherland club has replied to HelenaPF club
"...to lament is in vain!" If nothing is done, then yes. To make a historical comparison that narratives from 2500 years ago are still as relevant today despite change in generations and technology, no. Also through literature, they are a beautiful and evocative way of capturing the the raw emotions of afflicted times. History has a way of repeating itself as can be seen. Fortunately NY has taken action sparing hospitals the worst case scenario by flattening the curve, cases are generally on a decline unlike in some other states, and NYS policy is science-based instead of emotion-driven even if it does at times require patience. And yes, where there is despair and tragedy, there is always hope and healing.

Buona giornata
