Once the swan moved away, I removed the two plastic bags and carried them to the nearest garbage can. I didn't want some innocent creature choking on them.

Lovely composition. Such a beautiful elegant pose. At last charges for plastic bags have been introduced in Scotland. It's taken forever to happen but the number of bags used has dropped immediately. Goodness knows how long it will take before the ones littering up the landscape finally disappear.

Here in the States, there's still resistance as more municipalities ban them. Much of the resistance comes from businesses to which I say, if you can't survive and its too costly, maybe you should just shut your doors. After all, if individuals should aspire to be socially responsible, so should businesses.

Thanks for the info Kate. New York State was originally planning to exterminate 100% of the mute swan population calling them an invasive species that was "hostile" to humans. There was such an outcry and over a million of us signed an online petition that they thankfully backed down.

Hope the same can happen in Michigan and the innocent swans can be spared. We don't need sick extermination policies.

Plastic will be here long after all of us are gone ... a sad part of our 'throw away' society - it isn't difficult to keep a cloth bag in your car .. just in case you stop at the store - have cloth bags from Florida .... people in NC ask "what grocery store is that?"
Then, after telling them - "oh, they are moving into NC, too"...
