Retired Navy
An elderly gentleman (name unknown), in uniform, standing in front of Sailors' Snug Harbor, located on Staten Island, NY.

Sailor's Snug Harbor was founded through a bequest after the death of Revolutionary War soldier and ship master Captain Robert Richard Randall. It opened in 1833 and from the beginning, it was made clear that all were welcome .... no one was rejected because of ‘race, creed or color’. Only those who were considered ‘habitual alcoholics and those with contagious disease or immoral character’ were rejected. Photographer, Byron Company (NY, NY)
