Prisoners at Parish Prison during mealtime in New Orleans

Prisoners at Parish Prison during mealtime in New Orleans

Blacks convicted of misdemeanors or vagrancy could be assigned to become involuntary, unpaid laborers for private companies or plantations. Due to extreme inhumane conditions, black convicts under the leasing system were subject to significantly elevated death rates.
