Elsie P Austin

Elsie P Austin
Elsie P Austin (1908 - 2004), was appointed assistant attorney general of the state of Ohio in 1937, becoming the first African American woman in the nation to hold such a post. Austin was also the first African American woman to graduate from the College of Law at the University of Cincinnati in 1930. She became the first women's affairs officer for the US Information Agency in Africa in 1960 and served as executive director of the National Council of Negro Women. She was an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board for ten years.

Austin's picture is from the book "Women of Ohio: A Record of their Achievements in the History of the State," edited by Ruth Neely.
