I tend to think of play as something from which no product is derived except enjoyment. There is nothing after this. There is no lovely sauce to savor. No new language to speak. No new skill or knowledge conveyed or acquired. There are no photographs taken to share the memory or document a life. No tighter or bigger muscles nor stronger heart and lungs. There is no bookcase for the books, no drawing to hang on the wall. No blanket to get cozy under, no hat to keep the ears warm. No story to read nor song to sing along with. No fish to eat (or figuratively so), no cupcake to admire and put your face in.

Which means, taking this view, there are a lot of different kinds of work on a spectrum between Stuff We Really Hate To Do and Stuff We Really Love To Do. Which means the word "work" has lots of work to do. It must get very very tired! It also implies that what NLJ does all the time may as well be lots of heavy lifting.
