German designer Hartmut Esslinger was already famous when Steve Jobs called on him to come work with Apple in the early 1980s. Esslinger gained notoriety throughout the previous decade as he crafted Sony’s iconic minimalist look. In his new book, Hartmut Esslinger talks about the business of design, and also shows off some incredible Apple prototypes like a tablet concept before tablets were on anyone’s radar.
Hartmut Esslinger was brought on board in 1982, when Apple desperately needed some visual flare. Most of the companies products were falling flat — the original Apple computer was essentially keeping the business afloat. Esslinger and his design house Frogdesign masterminded the “Snow White” design language. If you’re not familiar with what that means, look no farther than the design of the Macintosh.
