This building, at 17 Dion. Areopagitou str., below the Acropolis ranks according to architecture historians among the most significant early 20th century monuments, and is the most beautiful Art Deco specimen in Athens. It was listed as protected in 1978, along another eight on the same street, and as a Work of Art in 1988.
It was designed in 1930 by architect V. Kouremenos (1875-1957). He was an honours graduate of the Eccole des Beaux Arts in Paris, member of the Athens Academy from its inception, Professor at the Athens National Polytechnic. He worked in Athen, Paris, Istanbul and Dublin and received prestigious awards.
It stands in the front corner of the site of the New Acropolis Museum. The official guidelines for the design of the Museum explicitly stated that the buildings at numbers 17 and 19 would remain in place. The New Museum was allowed a height of five more meters than neighbouring buildings, so that it could have a "dialogue with the Parthenon".
The Central Acheology Council ans the Council of State, approved the Museum´s plan based on the fact that the massive structure would be hidden behind the listed buildings of Dion. Areopagitou pedestrian walkway, and would thus not overburden the ancient monuments! But in 2007 the Ministry of Culture de-listed the building, so that, together with its neighbour, it will be demolished. The reason: the buildings partly block the view between the New Acropolis Museum and the Acropolis!
The barbaric decision of the Ministry of Culture, if implemented, will disturb the sanctity of the archaeological site, will demolish architectural heirlooms, will destroy the unique aura of Dion. Areopagitou pedestrian street, so that visitors can enjoy an uninterrupted vista with their snacks. Is that what we want?
