Taken on the area of the borough administration of Pankow/Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin.


This site began as a hospital, was taken over by the Red Army and used by the Soviet secret service NKWD as a penitentiary consisting of 40 cells. During the GDR the secret police (Stasi) made use of it.
Thousands of people were imprisoned and tortured there.
Thanks to a citizens' initiative memorials called "Denkzeichen" (signs of thought/memory) by artist Karla Sachse can be found there today.
