city reflected (and a bit of a rant ... sorry!)

city reflected (and a bit of a rant ... sorry!)
Almost exactly a year ago, as evening approached (and I headed home from work on my trusty bike "Betsy"), the last of the soft October light was casting warm reflections of the city on the river and the first touches of autumn seemed to have brushed color accents on the city parks trees. Shortly after that, I was once again working remotely from home, as a new wave of Covid19 swept through Italy.

A year later, 80% of the eligible population in Italy is fully vaccinated and another 5% has received the first dose. We still wear masks in indoor venues, on public transportation and in crowded outdoor places, but we can move around, all shops are open, if we need healthcare for something other than Covid we can get it and kids are mostly back in school.

We could probably dispense even with masks and social distancing if our national quota of vaccine hesitant folks (or their parents, in the case of kids over 12) were not being mislead by the misinformation trash that is still rampant on social media. Because of this trash, and the handful of orchestrators that originate it, we are still losing people who could have been protected by the vaccine, people of varying ages, including up to 25 kids each week, end up having to be hospitalised for Covid, we still have to wear masks and we had to implement vaccine mandates (which would not have been necessary if people's minds had not been poisoned against making rational choices). In my opinion, these orchestrators should not just be banned from social media. They should be brought to justice and made to answer for the deaths and the suffering of the people who unfortunately believed their lies.

I agree 100%. It is even worse in the US. I am lucky to live in a well-educated area where the vaccination percentage is high. I will not travel to Florida or Texas where the governors have politicized what should be strictly a public health matter and do not require masks.

Thank you, Esther. Texas Gov. Abbott has completely abdicated the fundamental State function of implementing sound public health policies and now has even gone as far as to forbid others to try and make up for his failure to do so. Florida's Gov. De Sanctis has vowed to protect personal choices and parental discretion over public health interests. I wonder if we should expect him to repeal laws that enforce speed limits and seat belt wearing or prohibit the sale of alcohol and tobacco to minors as well as other public health measures???
But probably not, both are too busy pursuing their political interests and, in Gov. Abbott's case, denying women their constitutional rights.

Can't agree with you more Annalia, well spoken. They think that Herd immunity keeps them safe, well it Don't !!! Herd immunity means out of a group of 100 people 80 who have been vaccinated the other twenty think they are unlikely to catch the virus ! Mmmm think on.
Love your Autumnal shot by the way.

Thank you, Maurice. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave a message. I think Italy is clearly showing that, while vaccinations do work (our transmission rate is finally below the epidemic threshold now that enough people have been vaccinated), 80% of eligible people vaccinated is not yet enough for herd immunity. We are still seeing about 2500 - 3000 new cases per day and dozens of people are dying every day. The virus is held at bay, but certainly still circulating.

Magnificent capture and completely agree with your position! 80%! That's a great number compared to the 56.2% here in the USA. It's sad people don't care about the well-being of others anymore and place there so-called "freedom" above the health and lives of others. Worse yet, with the vaccination numbers far worse here and with cases and deaths on the decline, unvaccinated Americans are finding another excuse to remain unprotected to endanger the health and lives of others. It is a false hope and a mirage… like the passing Indian summer before winter sets in. A new variant will come along, another COVID-19 tsunami will sweep the nation and thousands more will die. Here in the USA another dark winter should be in the forecast. :(

If this was 50 years ago, when there wasn't social media and so-called news organizations that disseminate lies, the lines would stretch for blocks and last hours to end this horrible pandemic.

Like Esther, I'm glad I live in a blue state where vaccination levels are above the national average.

Stay well!

thank you, William. As I wrote to Maurice, I think Italy's case proves the effectiveness of robust vaccination rates (and mask wearing in at risk situations). Our transmission rate (Rt) has been around 0.8 (below the epidemic threshold) for several weeks now despite the delta wave hitting us as it did everywhere else. Portugal, with an even higher vaccination rate, is lifting almost all restrictions.
Here too, as in the States, the people who get severely ill or die are overwhelmingly unvaccinated. But these are just the facts, I guess. And facts seem to get no traction with people who get hit by a barrage of misinformation daily, often coming to them from sources they consider "trustworthy" (friends, relatives, coworkers and, as you say, a favorite news outlet who has forgotten or never knew what ethical journalism is).
But can we really blame only people's faulty judgement, when their own governors refuse to enact sensible public health measures in the face of a killer pandemic? For me, most of these folks should be considered as victims and all I can say is that there must be a special place in hell for State governors who completely abdicated their fundamental duty to implement sound public health policies in favour of their political agenda.

2 years ago. Edited 2 years ago.
Annalia S. has replied to Gabi Lombardo club
Puoi trovare i numeri aggiornati sulle vaccinazioni qui, Gabi: www.governo.it/it/cscovid19/report-vaccini

Indeed, Farb. I get terribly upset when I think of all the suffering and death that could have been prevented if it weren't for these criminal spreaders of lies preying on people's fears.
The most awful "ring" in Dante's hell was reserved for those who betrayed their friends, family and country. Is it any less of a betrayal because it consists of lies travelling on an easily shared Fb post or tweet or what have you? I think trash is putting it mildly.

I really don't understand how reasonably intelligent people can be mislead so easily and so thoroughly.
Annalia S. has replied to micritter
I understand how you feel, but still, for me most of these people are actually victims of a vicious campaign that works a bit like a pyramidal scheme. I can easily picture a hard working mom or dad, struggling to deal with all their work, family and other responsibilities every day. Should they really be expected to spend hours sifting through the false information to get to credible sources, read the scientific information in its often obscure language for themselves? I am afraid it will be much easier (although possibly lethal) for them to believe something a trusted friend or relative sends them through social media. And that trusted friend is often spreading the lies without realising it because they too got it from someone they consider trustworthy. And so on, until you get to the truly evil people who know exactly what they are doing. And, as I wrote to William, can we really blame only people's faulty judgement, when their own governors refuse to enact sensible public health measures in the face of a killer pandemic?

Thank you, Erich. Judite just reminded me that in Portugal authorities were able to implement a good vaccination campaign that kept politics out of something that really has nothing to do with politics. It would probably pay to study closely how they did it.

I'm sorry, Annalia, I missed seeing this previously. Yes, I fully agree with everything in your 'rant'. We have been fortunate that, because we're an island, our State governments have been largely able to contain the virus - until one dropped the guard when the new Delta version came along. Now it's more or less contained in some States while others have been able to keep clear. The problem is that some States have higher vaccination rates than others, Melbourne has had the world's longest lasting lock-down, and there is a (thankfully small) proportion of idiots out there who are "anti-vaxxers" - today one has gone to the island State of Tasmania, tested infectious, and broken quarantine. Grrr. Enough of that, this is a lovely image.

This guy is beyond idiocy ... I got curious and checked your news and ... the authorities had to put the whole city in lockdown because he's not cooperating with contact tracing!! 3000$ is not nearly enough for what he's doing. At the very least, I would charge him the entire cost of the city-wide lockdown.

A beautiful view, you are lucky to see this everyday on your way from home to work and vice-versa.
Here 85% fully vaccined, 88% with at least one dosis and the third jab on the way before the end of the year for those over 65, with the flu vaccine at the same time (not in the same arm).
We are the most vaccinated country with the UAE, our vaccination was organized by military and was very well conducted.
We had very little of those stupid persons...

Beautiful capture of a beautiful city.
Couldn't agree more about the Covid situation. Here in the UK we are led by a corrupt government that thinks that 35,000-40,000 new infections per day and 200+ deaths per day is somehow "normal" and that the pandemic is behind us now...
