(My Smile Is Just A Frown) Tears Of A Clown

In 1963 Carolyn (Caroline) Crawford had just become a teenager when she won a talent contest. The prize was a contract with Motown Records. One of three singles she recorded was "My Smile Is Just A Frown (Turned Upside Down)" (Robinson - Bradford - Stevenson). This peaked at number thirty-nine on the R&B chart.

Stevie Wonder was 16 years old when he attended the annual Motown Christmas party in 1966. Stevie had written an instrumental with Hank Cosby but they couldn't find lyrics that fit. He asked Smokey Robinson for help. Two years earlier Smokey co-wrote "My Smile Is Just A Frown (Turned Upside Down" and re-wrote the lyrics as "Tears Of A Clown" for the 1967 Miracles (lead vocals Smokey Robinson, Pete Moore, Claudette Robinson, Bobby Rogers, Marv Tarpin and Ronnie White) album "Make It Happen". A slightly altered "Tears Of A Clown" (Hank Cosby - Smokey Robison - Stevie Wonder) was issued as a single three years later topping the U.S. pop, R&B and U.K. charts! This time Motown re-packaged "Make It Happen" and released the LP as "Tears Of A Clown".
