It's Only Make Believe
Conway Twitty (Harold Jenkins) recorded "It's Only Make Believe" (Twitty - Nance) in 1958 and had it go to the top of the charts in the U.S., the U.K. and Canada. Wikipedia: "It is believed that Conway wrote his part of the song while sitting on a fire escape outside his hotel room, to escape the summer heat, in Hamilton, Ontario. He had come to Canada at the request of another American singer, Rompin' Ronnie Hawkins, due to Hawkins saying to Twitty that Canada was the 'promised land' for music". This seems to be more than conjecture as I heard the story in the sixties. Incidentally his co-writer, Jack Nance, was also Conway's drummer.
Glen Campbell's 1970 cover of "It's Only Make Believe" was recorded for the release of "Glen Campbell's Goodtime Album". The single hit the top ten.
