Hurrying to Eastport

Hurrying to Eastport
The water route from the Atlantic through Friar Roads and even up the tidal St Croix River to Calais (Maine) / St Stephens (New Brunswick) closely follows the U.S./Canada border. This lobster boat is on the U.S. side.

Eastport Maine remained occupied by recalcitrant British troops even until 1818, following the December 1814 Treaty of Ghent which ended the War of 1812. The boundary line in this region was often in dispute; and even the final line was not as negotiated, because the captain of the vessel carrying the survey team was drunk, and took the easiest route between islands.
