St. Aldhelm's Chapel, Central Column - Sketch from 1993

St. Aldhelm's Chapel, Central Column - Sketch from 1993
Well, here we are: nothing to be proud of. But next to a postcard and a *verysmall* leaflet (written by typewriter, without any pictures and copied in an *veryold* way), it was the only image I brought along that time (hardly to imagine nowadays). After a bit of diggin' in my cellar I found it again and I realized that time paints things always more beautiful. In my memory it was more powerfull, and esp. better at all. But as I have announced it to Tanja, I should show it now.

It's the central (and only) column of the building, which carries the ceiling, parted into four similar square vaults. But the most important of that thing are its holes - in which young girls droped or sticked a pin or a hair-pin, to wish for a husband of their choice. This time there weren't any, but in 1993 when I was the last time in Britain, I saw two of them sticking in that column. ;-)

From the leaflet (by Majorie Wallace, 1985, 2nd Edition by Robert Watton, 1992):
"Mrs. Dora Wallace, still living in Worth, recalls being taken by her mother to drop a pin into a hole and wish. Perhaps this is the remains of a very old custom of making an offering to the priest for prayer for the safety of friends at sea."

Don't ask me, why I did not take a photograph of this mighty part of the building - I just don't know. But I will be back next year (before the abillity to drive on the right side of the road disapears again), that's fact. Nevertheless you won't find a lot of photographs of that column in the net. Two links, I could find will follow further down and a very nice photo-line, found by Tanja, shows aside the column a lot of the countryside and some more nice "things".

I am just awfully short on time, so I hardly can comunicate with you or visit your photographs in a proper way. I am very sorry about that! But see you soon. :-)
