Steam Elephant passing a very old looking fence!

Steam Elephant passing a very old looking fence!
A very old locomotive from around 1815.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_Elephant

Look carefully, and you will see it is a geared 0-6-0 locomotive, as opposed to the later direct drive and coupling rods.

Almost as early as Stephenson's Rocket I would say. An interesting experience, but maybe a bit sooty by the looks of things. ;-)

So wonderful! England is the mothercountry of the railroad technology for sure. A similar train wasn't introduced in Germany before 1835 (20 years later htan this one) and it, too, came from England!

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to Erhard Bernstein club
Hi Erhard ,
Thank you for visiting!
I'm happy that you had a good look!! As always you are right!

In terms of evolution, this is a couple of years after 'Puffing Billy' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puffing_Billy_%28locomotive%29
It is still a geared machine, but the Watt parallel motion of Puffing Billy has evolved into slide bars, but the cylinders are still being kept warm by the boiler. Stephenson's 'Locomotion' of 1825 was a later step along the evolutionary path, by using direct drive rather than gears (which needed a higher boiler pressure). Then the most well known early locomotive, the 'Rocket' used the higher steam temperature and pressure (derived from a multitubular boiler) to permit the cylinders to be mounted away from the boiler, and direct drive. The 'Adler' was the next development of the 'Rocket' by putting a bigger boiler, and an extra set of wheels under the firebox to carry it, plus moving the cylinders horizontal.

Hope this helps!!

Best Wishes, and keep safe!!

Although since the steam pressure is very low, it would not be as noisy as a modern locomotive.
It might appear again tonight for HFF!

Most replicas will work in steam, but they want to keep wear and tear to a minimum, so only occasionally, as you have noticed.

Wonderful view, Peter - it brings back happy memories of going to Beamish, both as a visitor and in connection with doing restoration work for the Museum. They have expanded so much that these days, you really need a couple of days to see everything. There's another big expansion of the "Town" being planned (covid permitting, that's something I'm looking forward to seeing)...

I find the Steam Elephant fascinating ... and back in 1990 (at Gateshead Garden Festival) I spent some time driving the Locomotion replica. So I'm wondering just how similar they would be to drive.
As for that lovely fence - the split rails were probably produced by riving branches with a froe. There's some useless information for you ...

Peter_Private_Box club has replied to StoneRoad2013 club
Hi Sara,
Thank you so much for your very kind visit.
I am pleased you found it interesting. Certainly Beamish has so much to see!
As for differences in driving, maybe not so much, except that this is a geared locomotive, so possibly more akin to a traction engine..
Best Wishes, and keep safe!!
