This picture of yours is a fantastic example of +/1 space and proper composition using dark and light in different sizes. Reminds me of one of my first graphic design assignments--to create a graphical piece just like this but using cross-hatching with pens on art paper to create the shapes. You would have gotten an A with this! :)
