Bat-friendly capped mineshafts.

Bat-friendly capped mineshafts.
Near Porthtowan, Cornish coast path. These mineshafts would once have been capped with concrete but now they are given grilles to enable access for the colonies of bats that use them.

C'est une bonne idée de permettre aux chauves-souris l'accès au puit.

I think in these days of Pandemic bats are not in the top ten of favorites.

What a good idea.................and I guess it provides refuge etc for other wildlife as well.

A great show of wildflowers Andy and a nice view out to sea!

Andy Rodker club has replied to Keith Burton club
I'm trying to think what other wildlife you mean, Keith! Bats seem to be more or less about the only candidates to me!
Pleased you like it. I'll add wildflowers to the notes ... Ah! I see I already have! (Well to keynotes anyway!)

Keith Burton club has replied to Andy Rodker club
There will be plenty of wildlife among the flowers (insects mainly) which won't get bothered now there is that structure keeping people out :-)

They do that with many of the old mines in Death Valley. What a wonderful photo of the Cornish coast. Must make a point of getting back there again.

Nor did I. I was puzzled, assuming they were to stop cattle, ponies, dogs and humans falling down. So I had to look it up (I forget where) and found out!

What a cool thing! It's nice when humans get the picture and help our fellow earth creatures.

We have swifts that migrate through the city every October. They use a very tall chimney from grade school (old building still in use). When my daughter went there, they wouldn't turn the furnace on in the school until the swifts had moved on - all the kids wore their coast inside. That was until about 10 years ago when they finally got a different type furnace and no longer use the chimney at all, so the swifts can stay as long as they want without the kids being cold!

Great idea for a bat-friendly method of keeping the old mine shafts safe. Hope there are more of these! Love the flowers too - heather and gorse. Also an orchid just right of centre? Or perhaps a foxglove (more likely, thnking about it...)

Andy Rodker club has replied to Earthwatcher club
Thank you!
Yes there are 100s of these scattered round the coast and inland too. I think the plant is heather, just a little bit more prominent than its neighbours!

Now _that's_ interesting! Here they just tend to get filled in, at least in the immediate vicinity of the urban area, for hazard amelioration.

How interesting, Andy. It's lovely to hear that, so this way the bats can go into the caves and be safe.

They can come and go from their roosting places. I didn't know it but they use these opsn-cast mineshafts to roost in during the day.
