Nor did I. I was puzzled, assuming they were to stop cattle, ponies, dogs and humans falling down. So I had to look it up (I forget where) and found out!

What a cool thing! It's nice when humans get the picture and help our fellow earth creatures.

We have swifts that migrate through the city every October. They use a very tall chimney from grade school (old building still in use). When my daughter went there, they wouldn't turn the furnace on in the school until the swifts had moved on - all the kids wore their coast inside. That was until about 10 years ago when they finally got a different type furnace and no longer use the chimney at all, so the swifts can stay as long as they want without the kids being cold!

Yes, sometimes people can do some heartwarming things!

Great idea for a bat-friendly method of keeping the old mine shafts safe. Hope there are more of these! Love the flowers too - heather and gorse. Also an orchid just right of centre? Or perhaps a foxglove (more likely, thnking about it...)

Yes there are 100s of these scattered round the coast and inland too. I think the plant is heather, just a little bit more prominent than its neighbours!

They can come and go from their roosting places. I didn't know it but they use these opsn-cast mineshafts to roost in during the day.
