The oldest door in Madrid

The oldest door in Madrid
By the side of La Torre de Los Lujanes, dated mid to late 15th century. Possibly earlier as there is still some Moorish influence there.
Shot taken in a very narrow alleyway. Camera to one side of head as I squeezed right back against the opposite wall. I couldn't see what I was taking. Pure guesswork and the first take was the one!

Dimas Sequeira, Fred Fouarge, Sami Serola (inactive), Nora Caracci and 20 other people have particularly liked this photo

Nice one Andy. A blind shot eh? Very effective. Now how do you know it's the oldest door in Madrid?

Thank you, Amelia!
Well, I wasn't there when it was built but it says so in all the guide and history books. I suppose they could all be wrong (these things do happen!).
The building, La Torre de Los Lujanes, is the oldest continuously inhabited building in Madrid, which seems pretty clear when you look at it. I may have a shot of it somewhere; if not I'll go and take one and post it. I will need to wait for the tourists to pass. The reason why this small door isn't so often photographed is because it is down a side alley. Possibly also the reason it has been left unaltered is that it's out of sight of the main square and therefore didn't need constant updating due to changes in architectural fashion over the ages!
Some of the churches are older but their doors are much changed.

You did well in that narrow space! The door has a very moorish look.

Thank you, Gudrun. The Moorish style stayed in place after the Christians had taken over Madrid (I can't say 're-taken' because it was The Moors who established Madrid in the first place!) in 1083. It is presumed the Moors provided the trained architects and stonemasons. In any event it took a long time for this style to be lost completely.

The walls had been cleaned recently (I remember them as black a few years ago!). I reckon they hadn't been cleaned since about 1490!! I took a photo of this door in about 2012 and it was a miserable looking thing then so I didn't post it and now I can't find it to show as a contrast pic!

Well worth the effort to get this shot Andy.............the door is really beautiful - great textures in the wood and sturdy, functional ironwork. It has certainly stood the test of time. I love the shape of the archway too.
