A long way down XIII

A long way down XIII
3 Griffon vultures on their ledges overlooking the broad vista of the Central Spanish plateau (or Meseta = high plains).
I see I have posted this one before - and not so long ago either.

Amazing view. A long way down unless you are a vulture or a hang glider.

I've gone on 120 plus walks here, Jean (I went back through my diaries and counted - how anal is that?) ... and I have never seen a hang glider in these mountains. Given their proximity to Madrid (30 miles only) you would have thought the place would be teeming with walkers, climbers, hang gliders, new age astral planers, or whatever.
But not a bit of it. On some Sundays and bank hols I can walk here for up to 10 hours without seeing another soul. And in summer, with the breeze and temperatures generally 5 degrees c lower than in the city, you would have thought that this great resource would be utilised to the max.
(There was one astonishing exception; I heard great commotion one day and expected a crowd of walkers around the next bend, and the next and the next etc etc. One hour later, as the noise became ever more deafening, I suddenly encountered 100s of scouts in formation and singing the Spanish version of Ging Gang Goolly at full voice. I was gobsmacked. I waited 15 minutes for them to all pass and then continued on my way as the cacophony slowly faded away. I was annoyed. Admittedly it was the enjoyment of one against the enjoyment of very many, but it did seriously mar my day in the hills and there are some aspects to the Spanish character that are still a mystery to me to this day .. the enjoyment of out-shouting others is one! The love of making as much noise as possible as if to say 'I'm living life to the full and I don't give a flying f..k about you losers!', is perhaps the same one).
The problem is that none of the great walks here includes a 3 hour restaurant lunch stop-over so that means the whole area is a complete no-no for nearly all Spaniards!! I can write this in the certainty that they could never deny it!

Nowt so queer as folk. The Lomond Hills in Fife which are little tame things are hoaching with walkers, runners, hang gliders, paragliders and even gliders in good weather. At the same time I've met people who've lived in Kirkcaldy twelve miles away all their lives and don't know it is on the Forth and has a promenade. This is in spite of the main shopping street being about fifty yards from the prom. And then there are the hordes who start up Ben Nevis wearing heels or flip flops and carrying a handbag.

Nice view of the griffon - closer than most of your photos of them I've seen. The blue haze gives an idea of just how far down it is.

Thanks Ronald. On my comment to your latest excellent upload (woodpecker) I've given the link to my vulture album where you will see a few close ups.
Best wishes, Andy
