Plaza de Colon (Cristobal Colon = Christopher Columbus - it needs explaining since most native English speakers don't know he is one and the same!)

I teach 5-6 times a week in the white building to the right of the brown and green Torre Colon. It is Number 1, Castellana, a prestigious address indeed and home to the Madrid office of Banque de Credit Agricole.
Christopher Columbus's stature is dwarfed by the Torre Colon behind it. Torre Colon was one of the early Madrid Skyscrapers and for a while in the early to mid 70s was the tallest building in Madrid. The green top was a later addition, apparently added when it's pre-eminence in altitude came under threat!

I teach there for a total of 7 hours a week and teach at many other location throughout Madrid too. But I think this is the nicest location of them all!

The building you work in looks much nicer than the Torre! What is it about English speakers that many only ever know the English version of foreign names and places? I remember one occasion when some Americans mixed up Bayreuth and Beirut;-)

On the other hand, we call Felipe VI 'Felipe VI' and the Spanish call Elizabeth II 'Isabel II', etc!

Yes, the cleaning personnel get going in the small hours. Since the recession, it hasn't been every night, and if you go for a walk in the city after midnight on Sunday, as many people do, then you will see lots of rubbish. But a walk in the same areas on Monday afternoon and everything will be clean and tidy again!

Such a beautiful, well kept and clean plaza...............nicely taken Andy.

Is it always that deserted or were you there very early ready for work?

I was early for a 2 o'clock class so I went for a brief walk round the square. Don't forget, if it's very hot, the Spanish sensibly stay in the shade, or indoors. And it was very hot!
