The Four Towers and street art.

The Four Towers and street art.
The whole area between here and these 4 towers has been an 'on and off - mainly off - project' for many years to build many more such towers - I read 5 more, then 13 more and then 137 more (OK I exaggerate here!). I think envy of La Defense in Paris runs deep. They can't make up their minds. I think the street art might stay here for years!

Diane Putnam, Fred Fouarge, John FitzGerald, Nouchetdu38 and 29 other people have particularly liked this photo

It makes a great contrast between the colourful street art and the rather severe towers.

An outstanding city-scape Andy! The towers look wonderful against the sky and the street art adds interest and colour to the foreground. If I could give this one five stars......I would!

But not by much, Rosa!
I did read a piece (in fact a four page pull out) in a newspaper about 5 years ago and a similar one a couple of years ago. They really do want to build many more.
But two things get in the way of ambition: lack of money of course, but also the recent major crackdown on corruption, heavily implicating (and imprisoning) many politicians and the major construction firms and banks. They're keeping a lower profile just now!

Yes I have read about that Andy. Also surprised that their new Prime Minister is an atheist. That's quite a change!

I read that Spain has more atheists per head of population that any other country in Europe and also the lowest church attendance.
It certainly isn't the image that most of us have of the Spanish. Possibly a legacy from the Franco dictatorship which was strongly supported by the Church.

That is interesting Andy and very surprising. I first visited Spain in 1970 when Franco was in power. A very different place! Glad he's gone!

I wondered something while looking at your other shot of the four towers. When multiple buildings of nearly the same height, shape and width are built side by side, how vertically off-level does one or two have to be so that it's noticeable by the naked eye? Of course, the one second to the right would be misleading due to its angles.

Yes, graffiti...okay, street art... is like cockroaches. (Well, technically, that would be ARE.)

Despite the above irrelevancies, that is an amusing shot

... and I just have time to reply before I tootle off to my first class of the day!
It is interesting (to me at any rate) that I have only ever taken shots from this angle. I've never been in a position to take shots that show how different they look from elsewhere in Madrid. Firstly, you are quite right, they are not all in a line but slightly out of kilter with each other and there is a larger gap between the middle two where there was to have been a taller, central tower.

Secondly, the only one which is as broad as it is wide is the pencil shaped one; the others look fuller from different povs and the one one on the right positively bulges out at the bottom, swelling along the line of the curve you can see. I might take the bus to the other side and look for a shot to illustrate these points. With fewer classes in the summer, I have the opportunity!

And thirdly, graffiti, mainly illegal, has been with you and us since the early 70s (maybe earlier in the New York subway) and I still dislike it intensely, in the main. But this lot is technically good, officially sponsored and does cheer up an otherwise hideous site that I have endured many times a week for 7 years and it has made a difference to my state of mind on arrival at a class in one of these towers or when returning to the station.

Glad you found the shot amusing!
Off to work!!
