The Four Towers

The Four Towers
Cuatro Torres, viewed from a classroom window in 2011.
Just after dawn (classes start early in companies).
On the horizon, La Sierra de Guadarrama.

Great light! Starting early isn't a bad idea in the heat...

True, but in 2011 my classes here started at 7:30 all year round! And there were no classes in June, July and August because they switched to 'working summer time' in June and July, which meant starting an hour earlier (at 7:30) hence no English classes for those 2 months (and in August the company shut for summer anyway).
This photo was taken in late May. Dawn would have been about an hour earlier but the sun was low and behind me. At that time I wasn't sure whether I'd be staying in Madrid for a second academic year and as I didn't have any photos of the 4 towers at that time, I thought it might have been my last opportunity.

You have no choice in Madrid!
Unless you want a cheaper low-light kind of place!

Nice, that view from a classroom window, there are worse ones!

Indeed there are! Don't forget, though, that I don't teach kids in schools, I teach Business English to adults from their offices and sometimes these are spacious, fully equipped, training rooms or meeting rooms, and at other times I am wedged in tiny cubicles that count as individual offices and are often windowless. They remind me of when I worked in Financial Services in London!

They look to me like four spikes driven into Madrid. In Toronto, of course, we have about four hundred all driven into downtown (well, a lot of them, anyway). most less attractive than these, but downtown Toronto has never been beautiful, so the damage was probably less.

They were controversial when built (2002-08) and controversial now. I like them, especially the views I get from the top where I have occasionally given classes to senior execs in their plush offices.
Unfortunately, photography is forbidden, for reasons that I don't know, except that they have an officially designated photo viewing space at the top with suitable windows but these look over polluted Madrid and so it's not often possible to get a good shot from there.
Frustratingly, I want to get shots of the Guadarrama mountain range, especially when snow covered. More interesting to me but they didn't think of that so there are no viewing windows on the other side. GRRRR!

I suppose they're a bit more orderly than the London carbuncles.

Pinpoint accuracy like needles in a pincushion rather than a splurge of objects thrown violently at a canvas as in London. I don't agree with P Chaz on most things but his carbuncles speechlet had a lot going for it, and yet GOOD modern architecture, and not modernism for its own sake has much merit.
