Photo taken in August 2014. I previously walked this stretch of coast path in the summer of 2010 and the path did indeed go straight across from this point! A massive land slip had occurred in those few years. Porthtowan and St Agnes Beacon can be seen. First posted on ipernity in 2018. Better on large.

I hope you don't mind, I've copied and pasted my reply to Larry!
That opposite section may well have gone too by now (6 years later); look at the cracks appearing at the top of the new cliffs. I keep meaning to check it out but with only a few days back each year, there is only so much I can see and do, sadly! The coast path now goes right round the far side of the green field, nor surprisingly!

What, in the jargon, is termed an "active slope..." ;)
Andy Rodker club has replied to slgwv club
It is indeed!
My mum recalls the path as being much further out to sea than I remember and it joined the current cliff at the point where the green field nearly meets the white cliff edge.
At this rate of erosion, I can easily see how legends of sunken lands such as Lyonesse, etc. arise; people would see a rapid erosion rate in their own lifetimes!

On reflection, yes. In the past I had being walking happily here. It was a pleasant place of heather and gorse and wildlife in general. I used to walk right close to the edge without a thought of any risk whatsoever!

Yep! Definitely a bit missing there...............well, not exactly missing, just sort of moved..!!

A cracking shot (no pun intended) Andy.............and a great example of coastal erosion. Not always as slow a process as people think :-)
Andy Rodker club has replied to Keith Burton club
It took me by surprise when I saw it I can tell you, Keith!
Then I recalled an item on the local news, just before I left for Spain in 2010, which referred to a large landslip near Porthtowan but I was too busy sorting out my move to take too much notice (after all land slips are frequent) and then I clean forgot. What amazed me was the sheer scale of it. Fortunately it was at night, in a storm, and none of the nearby residents heard or saw a thing!

That is massive and a bit scary. There is erosion mainly on the east coast of Scotland but not usually such a sudden change. With rising sea levels there could be big problems in the outer Hebrides. Benbecula in particular is very low lying and already a maze of lochs and lochans.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Jean
Every time I post an example of coastal erosion, one ipernity member or another points out that harbours are still silting up in other parts of the coast!
And it's true!
Have a good week ahead, Jean!

Much the same but a few tussocks of hardy grass here and there. I had photos but they are locked away in an external hard drive that I can't currently connect to my current laptop (long story). That is why nearly all of my Cornish uploads are repeats these days!

Nice to see this picture again, Andy ! At present time, as I have not the opportunity to get out, I'm watching a serie which is taking place in Cornwall !! A feast for the eyes !!

Andy Rodker club has replied to Marie-claire Gallet
What is the series, Marie-claire! Usually it is German TV productions that film here as Germans love Cornwall and comprised over half of overseas tourists each summer!
Marie-claire Gallet has replied to Andy Rodker club
POLDARK, a British series !! In general I do love British series as they are of very high quality, with good actors, decor and scenari : For example Versailles, Downtown Abbey, Outlander aso ...
3 years ago. Edited 3 years ago.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Marie-claire Gallet
Oh yes, I thought it might be! Rosa has been trying to get me to watch it for very many years, Marie-claire. I had to confess to her that I haven't seen one minute of ANY poldark series and that includes the original one in the '70s!
The reason is that my mother had some of the books and I thought (aged 15 or so), 'Ah! these might be good!' as I already loved Cornwall. But they were SO BAD that I couldn't bring myself to have anything to do with Poldark and that included the TV series! Sorry!

Yes I would imagine it would be very dangerous to expect to see the walk still there, in these times of coastal erosion. It's a terrible situation when paths just disappear into nothing, the coastline is so pretty though isn't it,?
