Wild tulips in their element!

Wild tulips in their element!
They seem to like this degraded granite slope. It is saturated with rain and snow melt in winter but is free-draining after that.

These wild ones are so bright. Better out here in the wild than in huge fields in the Netherlands.

You can see why the original wild ones caught the eye in the first place and why they were cultivated.

I've seen these flowering in profusion on coastal cliffs in Norway, Andy. They seem to be very adaptable. :-))))

That IS interesting. A different species of tulip perhaps? I read that wild tulips were only to be found in a band stretching from the Caucasus, through Turkey the Balkans, Italy and Spain.
I might look into this further if I get some time (unlikely!). Best wishes,
Andy

they have no leaves......but they are very pretty :)

Look carefully, roeli and you can see them - greenish grey so camouflaged against the crumbly scree, quite low down and much thinner than with the cultivated varieties.
But yes they are pretty!

I have tried growing them the stems are much shorter, don't know if that is breeding or the conditions

They must be very particular in the wild, I suspect, Peter and probably even more so out of their comfort zone!
They do seem to thrive here!
