I had no idea these sculptures existed. It just goes to show how we walk around with our eyes wide shut, immune to our surroundings. But walk the same streets with a camera in your hand and you notice all kinds of details that on any other day you would walk right past; oblivious. This is one of the things which fascinates me about photography. The serendipitous discovery of quirks and oddities like these elicits in me an almost childlike delight and sense of wonder.

Rod Burkey club has replied to Billathon club
They were sculptured from black basalt by Edmund C Thompson in 1934 and represent the fact that the Mersey Tunnel is open both day and night.

I find them to be very striking.
