Bryce Canyon Terracota Army

Bryce Canyon Terracota Army
Another shot taken in Bryce Canyon, I think you can see why I called it Terracota army !!!

The local Indians called these features 'Hoodoos'.

Martine, Tacheles, Jacky Dartier, Thierry49 and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Your Terracotta Army may be called Hodoos but it also just is a nice bunch of hoodoos, what ever it s named!

In american english hoodoo is a word denoting all those chimney or pillar formations protected by a top layer, as they typically occurre near the rim or filling up most of a drainage basin. Some are called "Hoodoos" as official name as well, but it is also a vallid geological description for anything like the Pinnacles" in Australia or the comperably punny wee "Churfirsten" here at Lake Constance, apperantly.

The various geological parks around the "Four Corners" are amazing. Did you go in a guided tour there or driving and hiking on your own leisure?

Hello Sonja,
Many thanks for your info - very interesting.
The trip was a 17 day excursion which took us from Denver in Colorado through many parks and canyons including Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon down to Phoenix in Arizona where we flew out to come home to the UK.
For my wife and I it was a trip of a lifetime and cost us quite a lot of money but well worth it ! We did take the same sort of trip to Canada a few years earlier.
