1985 promotional ad, Mid-Cities Mall, Manitowoc, WI

1985 promotional ad, Mid-Cities Mall, Manitowoc, WI
Opening in 1968 as the first enclosed shopping center in the area, the Mid-Cities Mall in Manitowoc (located between the city center and nearby Two Rivers, WI) featured anchors of JCPenney ("Penneys") and Montgomery Ward ("Wards")...both with full lines and auto service a Woolworth, Osco Drug, and an A&P supermarket providing sizeable tenants on the side.

Although the mall thrived throughout the 1960s and 1970s, subsequent developments began to slowly undermine the strength of the mall. The completion of I-43 through Manitowoc County in the 1980s helped skew commercial development to the opposite end of town, and the construction of more modern shopping centers in the area began to siphon tenants off.

Montgomery Ward, the mall's co-anchor, closed in a round of corporate manuevers in the mid 1980s. In spite of attempts at reviving the mall in subsequent years...attracting nontraditional businesses, changing the name of the mall to "Lakeview Centre," and grafting a sit-down Hardee's restaurant on to the side...things were never quite the same again. The mall interior closed in 2000 and has been abandoned since, though JCPenney...the mall's other original co-anchor...remains open and in operation to this day.

This promotional ad appears in the margin of a road map from 1985.
