Texaco signpost reused by KFC, Circleville, OH

Texaco signpost reused by KFC, Circleville, OH
Just south of Circleville, Ohio on U.S. 23, I came across a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant with a very odd sign: A tall pole with a series of six horizontal protrusions and nothing else but a chicken bucket at top.

What could possibly explain it? One probable theory I've come across holds that the pylon actually started off life as a TEXACO sign: Presumably, the service station was torn down; a KFC was built on the site, and the thrifty chicken-fryers chose to reuse the pole. But WHY they chose to do this (and why they didn't bother cutting off the individual letter mounts protruding to the side) remains a question mark.
