Abandoned Wal-Mart

Abandoned Wal-Mart
Here's a sight that's becoming much too common. In its mad quest to leverage its domination in general merchandise sales upon the grocery industry as well, Wal-Mart has relocated hundreds of its store locations to newly-built "Supercenters" in the last decade. As a result, they've been leaving hundreds of empty boxes behind. Many of these buildings are less than twenty years old themselves, form major parts of shopping centers that effectively collapse without a major anchor, and are extremely large and impractical structures to re-tenant. In any case, Wal-Mart's store turnover has gotten to the point where I do a double-take when I see a store of theirs still in operation that's not a supercenter.

Both the abandoned Wal-Mart and the deserted shopping center it once anchored are probably not much more than 15 years old. The Kmart still kicking down the street is likely twice as old as that...
