Allen's Supermarket, Princeton, WV

Allen's Supermarket, Princeton, WV
Yes, another through-the-car-window-while-idling-at-a-red-light picture. Allen's Supermarket was a very small supermarket "chain" of two stores in Mercer County, West Virginia owned by Allen Griffith. Allen's was eventually acquired by Acme Markets, a slightly larger chain based in North Tazewell, Virginia (not to be confused with the better-known Pennsylvania and Ohio chains of the same name), and the stores were converted to the Acme banner in the mid '90s. After several changes in ownership, however, Acme went out of business in late 2002. Several of the stores were sold and later re-opened under new management; this store reverted to the "Allen's" banner at that time.

The last time I checked, they still play real musak inside.

This supermarket was paired with a SupeRx drugstore (later Revco, later CVS) which closed shortly after Acme's early 2000s implosion. The space is now occupied by an aquatic pet shop, of all things.

Also visible in the background is an old Lowe's home improvement store that closed around 1992 in favor of a larger location, that in turn has been replaced again twice (!) since. It's almost hard to believe now that less than twenty years ago, Lowe's stores were a slim fraction of their present-day size and had drop ceilings...
