Le mur de Berlin (en allemand Berliner Mauer), « mur de la honte » pour les Allemands de l'ouest et « mur de protection antifasciste » d'après la propagande est-allemande, est érigé en plein Berlin à partir de la nuit du 12 au 13 août 1961 par la République démocratique allemande (RDA), qui tente ainsi de mettre fin à l'exode croissant de ses habitants vers la République fédérale d'Allemagne (RFA). Le mur sépare physiquement la ville en Berlin-Est et Berlin-Ouest pendant plus de vingt-huit ans, et constitue le symbole le plus marquant d'une Europe divisée par le Rideau de fer.

Plus qu'un simple mur, il s'agit d'un dispositif militaire complexe comportant deux murs de 3,6 mètres de haut avec chemin de ronde, 302 miradors et dispositifs d'alarme, 14 000 gardes, 600 chiens et des barbelés dressés vers le ciel. Plusieurs centaines de ressortissants de la RDA perdent la vie en essayant de le franchir, les gardes-frontière est-allemands et soldats soviétiques n'hésitant pas à tirer sur les fugitifs.

L'affaiblissement de l'Union soviétique, la perestroïka conduite par Mikhaïl Gorbatchev et la détermination des Allemands de l'Est, qui organisent de grandes manifestations, provoquent, le 9 novembre 1989, la chute du « mur de la honte », suscitant l'admiration incrédule du « Monde libre » et ouvrant la voie à la réunification allemande. Presque totalement détruit, le Mur laisse cependant dans l'organisation urbaine de la capitale allemande des cicatrices qui ne sont toujours pas effacées aujourd'hui. Le mur de Berlin, symbole du clivage idéologique et politique de la Guerre froide, a inspiré de nombreux livres et films. Aujourd'hui, plusieurs musées lui sont consacrés.

Die Berliner Mauer war während der Teilung Deutschlands mehr als 28 Jahre Teilstück einer 1378 Kilometer langen innerdeutschen Grenze zwischen der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (DDR) und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. In der DDR wurde sie als „befestigte Staatsgrenze“ oder (propagandistisch) als „antifaschistischer Schutzwall“ bezeichnet (von Horst Sindermann geprägt).

Die Berliner Mauer war damit Bestandteil und zugleich markantes Symbol des Konflikts im Kalten Krieg zwischen den Westmächten unter Führung der USA und dem Ostblock unter Führung der Sowjetunion. Vom 13. August 1961 bis zum 9. November 1989 trennte sie innerhalb der durch die Nachkriegsordnung der Alliierten Siegermächte entstandenen Viersektorenstadt das Stadtgebiet von Groß-Berlin in zwei Teile: Berlin (West) und Ost-Berlin („Hauptstadt der DDR“). Da die Mauer auch in dem ganzen West-Berlin umgebenden Gebiet der DDR errichtet wurde, war der Westteil der Stadt fortan eine von Mauern umgebene westliche Insel, auch „Schaufenster der freien Welt“ genannt.

Seitens der DDR war das Übertreten der Grenze verboten. Für die DDR-Grenzsoldaten galt in solchen Fällen der Schießbefehl. Bei den Versuchen, die 167,8 Kilometer langen und schwer bewachten Grenzanlagen in Richtung West-Berlin zu überwinden, wurden nach derzeitigem Forschungsstand zwischen 136 und 206 Menschen getötet. Die genaue Zahl der Todesopfer an der Berliner Mauer ist nicht bekannt.

The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a concrete barrier built by the German Democratic Republic (GDR, East Germany) that completely enclosed the city of West Berlin, separating it from East Germany, including East Berlin. The Wall included guard towers placed along large concrete walls, which circumscribed a wide area (later known as the "death strip") that contained anti-vehicle trenches, "fakir beds" and other defenses.

The separate and much longer Inner German Border (the IGB) demarcated the border between East and West Germany. Both borders came to symbolize the Iron Curtain between Western Europe and the Eastern Bloc.

Before the Wall's erection, 3.5 million East Germans had avoided Eastern Bloc emigration restrictions and escaped from the GDR, many by crossing over the border from East Berlin into West Berlin. From West Berlin, emigrants could travel to West Germany and other Western European countries. During its existence from 1961 to 1989, the Wall stopped almost all such emigration and separated the GDR from West Berlin for more than a quarter of a century. After its erection, around 5,000 people attempted to escape over the wall, with estimates of the resulting death toll varying between around 100 and 200.

During a revolutionary wave sweeping across the Eastern Bloc, the East German government announced on November 9, 1989, after several weeks of civil unrest, that all GDR citizens could visit West Germany and West Berlin. Crowds of East Germans climbed onto and crossed the wall, joined by West Germans on the other side in a celebratory atmosphere. Over the next few weeks, parts of the wall were chipped away by a euphoric public and by souvenir hunters; industrial equipment was later used to remove almost all of the rest. The fall of the Berlin Wall paved the way for German reunification, which was formally concluded on October 3, 1990.

The Berlin Wall was officially referred to as the "Anti-Fascist Protection Wall" (German: Antifaschistischer Schutzwall) by the communist GDR authorities, implying that the western countries controlling West Berlin were fascist. The West Berlin city government sometimes referred to it as the Wall of Shame, a term coined by Willy Brandt.
