Nuthatch behind bars
Well, it could be consided an Open Prison ! We have had a pair of Nuthatches (Sitta europaea) visiting very regularly for a couple of years or so. In early July I realised I hadn't seen either for quite a while. I hoped they had gone on a Summer holiday and not to the Great Seedfeeder in the Sky. Then two weeks back I noticed a flash of chestnut and blue and, a little while after, another - they had returned for Winter ;-) They are not a shy bird at all. They wouldn't let me get too close, of course, but will happily visit any feeding station whilst I sit with my afternoon cuppa about 15-20 feet away (sparrows won't do that.) Here's hoping some more of our winter visitors appear soon.
