Gosh, it's harder work than I thought
Woodpecker Junior looking as if it's tackling more than it can peck. In fact, it was just the way the camera took it as the juvenile Great Spotted Woodpecker was having no trouble at all demolishing the suet contents of the coconut shell in our garden. Strange, though, neither of the visiting adult birds ever try to perch on this shell so maybe it is something that only a youngster would think of doing.

You can tell it's a juvenile by the red on top of its head. I suspect it's a young male because the red is large and bright (and it does daft things!!) The adult male has a red patch only on the back of its neck whilst the female has no red on its upper back at all. They all have a red lower belly (just the edges seen here.)
