Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland

Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland
Long before there were countries called England and Scotland, there was the Kingdom of Northumbria which stretched from the banks of the Forth and Clyde southwards to the banks of the Humber and Mersey. Its seat of power was this castle - Bamburgh Castle in present day Northumberland. Not this actual building (which is largely Victorian) but this fortified hill top.

Northumbria easily surpassed, in its day, the kingdoms of Mercia and Wessex. But it was unable to keep its power and it was Wessex, in later centuries, which went on to form the Kingdom of England. If Northumbria had managed to remain dominant, we may not have had the United Kingdom we know today. But "If" is the stuff of fantasy history.

Northumberland's beaches are amongst the finest in the country.
