African Tulip Tree

African Tulip Tree
Driving through the Atherton Tablelands near Millaa Millaa we stopped to photograph a large tree that was covered with these brilliant orange blossoms. We later discovered that not only is it not native to Australia but is considered one of the worst of invasive species. It not only infesst areas of tropical rainforest but is toxic to native bees, destroying them as pollinators of other species.

Jan Klimczak, Jacky Dartier, Odile, Eve and 27 other people have particularly liked this photo

Spathodea campanulata may be a weed, but it is a beautiful flowering one.

Beautiful flowers and all, but it definitely is a problem outside its native lands... Nice find and capture! Or should I say unfortunate find and capture? ;)

It's always the same. They pick the flowers when it says not to, walk off the trails when the signs indicate sensitive areas, leave their trash and dog poo behind on the trails, show no consideration for others and sometimes by their insensitivity and stupidity earn the Darwin award, i.e., contribute to the improving of the gene pool by removing themselves from it.

Was reading last year and in one US National Park... on the routes to the classic summits... and area of 5 sq miles had HUMAN waste under a huge percentage of the stones etc. So lets not blame the dogs... lets blame the REAL perpetrators.. HUMANS.

I LOVE those Darwin Awards.... not enough of them....

These trees can be quite a pest, but the native birds absolutely love them. Lovely capture.
