Worthington Glacier

Worthington Glacier
Worthington Glacier is along the Richardson Highway to Valdez and is an easy hike. There is a viewing area near the car park but it is possible to hike both to the hills above the glacier and to the foot of the glacier, both of which we did. Like so many other glaciers this one is receding and the pond and debris are in the area where the glacier reached not long ago.

Heidiho, Don Sutherland, J. Gafarot, Eve and 25 other people have particularly liked this photo

Sad for me. You don’t want to remember the way the ice used to be.

It's sad even for someone who's not seen the glacier before its precipitous retreat. What's been left behind is a testimony to what's happened over the last decades.

Ode to our melting Glaciers : I can feel it, ....slipping away,
It will be gone...in a few more years,
If they don't stop our glaciers....
I see,... from melting away !

We are watching our glaciers thin and recede as well, Ron...scares the livin' daylights out of me for what the future holds.

That said, with no one else around, I'd be in that tarn in a heartbeat, paddling around until I started feeling hypothermic (maybe all of three minutes?)

Sad... and yet still has beauty.

I bet the ostriches with their heads in the sand would find a way to explain this away

Beautiful shot with the reflections.

Seems all glaciers all recede at an obscene speed. You know, on the Pasterze there is a funicular train, upper station of which is visible in the corner of two of my recent posts. The thing was built barely 6 years before my birth, concepted in a way the lower station would release people on a viewing deck right above the end of the ice sole. Today the walking trail from the lower station is already a hike of around 20 minutes one way along the run off up to the end of perenial ice mass. :(

Outstanding shot, Ron. Congratulations on Explore; well-deserved! I especially like seeing the blue glacier water. It reminds me of the Athabasca Glacier which we saw some years ago. Incredible experience.
