Scaly Pholiota

Scaly Pholiota
These are more mushrooms from Wallace Falls State Park and an autumn hike there. This, I believe, is Pholiota squarrosoides, the Scaly Pholiota. Once thought to be edible, it is now considered poisonous, especially if consumed with alcohol.

Once thought to be edible? I can only image the circumstances in which they found this not to be true. A superb shot.

Great photo of these Pholiota's. I was always under the impression that they tasted like awful and no body would want to eat them. They are very common here and I know none from the Mycological Society to even consider eating one.

I don't know much about what's edible and what's not, but that's the information I found in my references.

I'm pretty hopeless at identifying mushrooms, but I do find them fascinating, both for their many unusual and beautiful forms and for their strange biology. It's interesting to me that lots of wild mushrooms seem to be toxic when combined with alcohol. I wonder what causes that.
