Sophronitis acuensis

Sophronitis acuensis
There are a number of species in the genus, Sophronitis (now reclassified as Cattleya). They are all from Brazil and are some of the most desirable or orchids for their bright red and orange colors and for their potential in hybridizing. They are not the easiest plants to grow, however, preferring cooler temperatures and good light. This is one of the smaller species, though it has very large flowers for the size of the plant. The photo illustrates another feature of some of these species also: the flowers increase dramatically in size after opening, often doubling their size, as is evident from the two flowers in this photo, one recently opened and still much smaller than the other flower.

John Linton, Peter, Василий Касимовский, Klaus Ehrenheim and 41 other people have particularly liked this photo

Beautiful and interesting in this bright red!
What exactly means "potential in hybridizing"? Any chances that it could help with the market gap of easy mainstream windowsil orchids in a befitting red for firefighters or santa claus? :o)
Ron Hanko has replied to Sonja
Almost all the red color in Cattleya hybrids comes from this species which also reduces the size of the plants and makes them more amenable to windowsill culture.

What a beautiful and fascinating flower, Ron! Thank you for the great background on it. How long did they take to grow and flower?
Ron Hanko has replied to Puzzler4879
I received it as a mature plant, John, and it bloomed the second year I had it. From seed many orchids take from five to seven years to bloom.

Exceptionally beautiful and so interesting about the size of the flower growing!

Another heart-stopping picture, what dazzling blossoms!

To answer your question: no, I haven't tried orchids again since the disappointing failures many years ago. Maybe some day I'll get some more. With a clever husband, perhaps he would make me an orchidarium and I would get to enjoy a few of the easier to care for varieties! I do love them so, and Cattleyas are a favorite of mine...lol...I recognized this type of orchid immediately! Funny how I'm remembering what I'd forgotten so long ago. Used to pore over the magazines and books!
