Pacific Madrone

Pacific Madrone
Taken in the area of Deception Pass (these grow only along the coast), this is one of our most beautiful and unique trees, the Pacific Madrone, Arbutus menziesii. In this photo the peeling reddish bark and green wood can be clearly seen.

Kirsten Schulz, Mimosa, pajmcb, John Linton and 17 other people have particularly liked this photo

A quite exotic and somehow tropical looking tree... Is it from the temperate rain forest?
Ron Hanko has replied to Sonja
No they are not from the rain forests, but from dry exposed coastal locations in BC, Washington, IOregon, California and Mexico.

It sure looks unique with that wonderful peeling bark. Here in NYC the closest tree we have that peels is the hardy but homely London Plane Tree. I like to crunch the dry bark pieces as I walk. Nice shooting once again, Ron!

...and hard to tame for the garden. I had one but lost it a couple of years ago, I think perhaps to sudden oak death. Let it stand until two young artisans showed up and begged me for its wood.
