Before I came to Canada, 4 years ago, I had worked ten years for the oil industry in Paris. I hated life in an office. Or was it because it was in Paris, where you have to make extra hours every day to be considered as a dedicated resource, where you have to arrive before your boss and leave after him(/her - but too rarely, especially in the oil industry), where you have to deal with gossips about how you slept with whom to get this or that position - of course your diplomas and talents aren't the point when your looks are ok, and so on, and so on. Plus the amount of stress I can cope ith is pretty small, and in this industry, there's no way you can make a nice fulfilling career without experiencing stress sooner or later.
When I finally decided to cross the big pond, I made myself the promise never to live that again. I have never been happier professionally. Sometimes I miss having colleagues or some of the bosses I had, with whom I had some fun, and also some of the thrill of global bids or of creating a new subsidiary abroad, but I have my peace now, this has no price.
Except now I can't dress up.
Damn it, I miss that.
