Møvik Panorama

Møvik Panorama
5 photo's corrected using DxO Pro 8 then stitched together using PSE11 to make this panoramic shot showing Møvik fort which lies 8 km (5 miles) West of Kristiansand at Vesterberg. The fort lies on a hill, partly covered by woodland, on an high ridge with views over Skagerrak.

The German name of the fortress was Batterie Vara. Together with a sister battery at Hanstholm in Denmark were built to block the Skagerrak and the sea route to the East of Norway, Kattegat, Auster Sea and the Baltic for allied naval forces.

The fort has four gun positions with bunkers - one full intact cannon, two empty cannon wells and an empty casemate along with a whole range of other buildings, bunkers and machine gun posts and more.

The one surviving cannon is one of the largest in the world with its 38 cm calibre. The barrel alone weighs 110 tons and is almost 20 meters in length. Total weight is 337 tons. The range is up to 55 kilometres (34 miles). The cannons were manufactured in Germany by Krupp. They were of the same type as those aboard battleships "Bismarck" and "Tirpitz".
