Hammerhoi

Hammerhoi
The so-called "Hammerhøi" by Sande old rectory written about already in 1823, by Lorentz Diderik Kluwer who undertook travels in Norway to research "ancient sites". The mound about 22 cubits in diameter.
Dean Hans Danial Hammer (d. 1812) levelled the top of the mound, probably for placing a gazebo on top.

The mound has not been archaeologically researched but from the area around the rectory there have been finds that suggest that there was a large Viking burial ground here.
While building the new town hall in 1974, a sword, obviously grave-goods, dated from the Viking era. A copy of the sword now hangs in the town hall.

In Sande there are many Iron-age burial grounds. Most are located around the Ås area, which was researched in 1910 and again in the period 1950-58. Finds dated from the Early/late Iron age (about 400B.C.)
