--------------------------------
After learning to sail with Maidens fishermen. The 3rd marquess of Ailsa built the harbour for their protection. It became a thriving shipyard producing two of Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock Challengers. The harbour, like many west coast harbours, was originally built for fishing but today is mainly used by those who sail for pleasure.

Maidens is also reputedly said to be the landing site of Robert the Bruce after leaving exile from his hide out on the Isle of Arran. After watching the spider, his saying of 'try, try and try again' sent him on his path to victory at Bannockburn.
