The 2 previous times I had visited this shrine, the building had been partially obscured by scaffolding. This time, however, the refurbishment was complete,.. fresh paint, and the light of a late afternoon sun....

I like this bright and vivid orange and red colors of the shrines and temples. For me it's one of the most typical memories I have of Japan.

manganite replies:
Maybe it's pure Chinese, but many things are adopted by Japanese and turned into something own and typical for them, starting by their characters, the kanji.

Ramen is Chinese, tempura is Portuguese and so on, and nevertheless it's also Japanese.

But nevertheless you live in present Japan and maybe wouldn't if you dislike it.

Was pre-Nara Japan genuine Japanese? The emperors family is Korean, isn't it?

"Japan" means many different things. The difference between remote parts of any country differ enormously from the major cities. Ultimately Japan, China, Korea, etc are fluid concepts...Did I suggest anything was genuine or not?

manganite replies:
Yes, culture varies also inside a country very much. Look at Germany, Bavarians are completely different from the people at the North Sea. But nevertheless the basics are common.

No, you suggested nothing direct. I only got the impression that you dislike modern Japan cause of being not genuine Japanese enough. Or why do you call this "pachinko shinto"? It doesn't sound like a compliment... On the other hand you prefer the old stile, so maybe more genuine Japanese.
