You say elsewhere, Diane that serious gardening is beyond you now. Wouldn't container gardening be an answer? Maybe terracotta would be too heavy but there are some passable lighter alternatives these days. You could also more easily experiment with finding some interesting and colourful shade-tolerant plants.
