Exactly. Often, when people move, they leave behind things on the street that they want to get rid of. There is no need to even put a FREE sign if it's placed across the sidewalk. That means it no longer belongs to those people and you can take it. This is one way college students furnish their apartments - lol!

It is common here to leave something on the curb if you want someone to take it away. It is understood that it's FREE! I have done it myself and the item is gone the same day, maybe in a few minutes! In some communities this is not allowed.

I'm surprised the place is empty. Somebody has been watering the garden and especially those handsome containers!
You say elsewhere, Diane that serious gardening is beyond you now. Wouldn't container gardening be an answer? Maybe terracotta would be too heavy but there are some passable lighter alternatives these days. You could also more easily experiment with finding some interesting and colourful shade-tolerant plants.
